Access Bank Zambia Hands Over Renovated Maternity Wing at UTH Lusaka, Zambia
Access Bank Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to maternal healthcare through the handover of the renovated BO3 Maternity Wing at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
The renovation project, completed at a cost of K350,000, focused on critical improvements including plumbing and electrical maintenance, new paintwork, enhanced privacy through the installation of curtains, and the provision of chairs for both patients and healthcare workers. This is the second phase of Access Bank’s support to UTH’s maternity services, following a similar renovation in 2023 valued at over K400,000.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Access Bank Zambia Managing Director, Mr. Lishala Situmbeko, said the handover is more than a ceremonial act, but a reaffirmation of the Bank’s commitment to maternal healthcare in the communities where the bank has presence.
“Our support goes beyond budgets and boardrooms; it comes from the heart.” Mr. Situmbeko said.
In addition to the Bank’s financial investment, this year’s project was further enhanced through the Employee Volunteering Programme. Staff from various departments including Corporate Communications, Financial Control, Strategy, Enterprise Business Services, Legal, and Administration came together to raise funds used to purchase bedding, pillows, and cleaning materials for the ward, further improving patient comfort and hygiene.
The Bank also recognised the contribution of its partner, Signwave, which donated a television set to the ward, a gesture aimed at enhancing patient experience and providing comfort during their stay.
And UTH Senior Medical Superintendent, Dr. Kalima Munalula commended Access Bank’s continued support to the institution: "This partnership is making a real difference in the quality of care we are able to provide. The upgraded facilities promote safety, dignity, and a better healing environment for mothers and babies."
The timing of this handover, just days after the world celebrated International Mother’s Day, is symbolic of Access Bank’s commitment to women’s health. Through its flagship women’s banking proposition, the W Initiative, the Bank offers a range of Maternal Health Services Solutions aimed at empowering women and supporting their wellbeing.
Access Bank Zambia remains committed to delivering real impact and supporting national healthcare priorities by investing in projects that directly benefit communities.
